“네 장막터를 넓히며 네 처소의 휘장을 아끼지 말고 널리 펴되 너희 줄을 길게 하며 너희 말뚝을 견고하게 할지어다.” (이사야54:2).
이사야 53장은 “고난의 종(the suffering servant)”을 노래하는 유명한 장입니다. 그런데 그 뒤를 이어 나오는 54~56장은 예루살렘의 회복에 대한 예언과 아울러 이스라엘 뿐 아니라 열방을 불러 하나님의 백성을 삼겠다는 하나님의 약속의 말씀입니다. “네 장막터를 넓히며”란 말은 확장공사를 해서 건물의 평수를 늘리라는 말이 아니라 하나님 나라에 대하여 소극적이었던 생각을 바꾸고 안목을 새롭게 하여 마음을 넓히고 하나님께서 하시는 일에 기쁨으로 동참하라는 명령입니다. 저는 2013~14 회계연도를 맞이하여 “장막터를 넓히는” 작업을 비전으로 삼았으면 합니다. 이 넓힘의 방향을 “into the hearts” (심령 속으로) 그리고 “into the world” (세계 속으로)라고 설정하고 싶습니다.
심령 속으로 더 깊숙이 하나님의 나라를 확장하라는 것을 “기독교 교육”에 대한 관심으로 생각해 보았습니다. 올해는 자녀교육부와 장년교육부가 좀 더 짜임새 있고, 알찬 모습으로 발전되어 가기를 바랍니다. 특히 Nursery로부터 12학년에 이르는 자녀교육부가 새롭게 도약하는 모습을 보고 싶습니다. 이미 감당하기 벅찰 정도로 많은 자녀들을 하나님께서 우리 교회에 허락해 주셨습니다. 수많은 쥬빌리 자녀들이 앞으로 어떻게 여기서 교육받고 성장하여 하나님께서 편안하게 쓰시는 주의 나라의 일꾼이 될는지가 너무나 중요한 이슈입니다. 저는 금요 아와나를 비롯한 교육 프로그램과 토요 한국학교, 그리고 주일학교로 이어지는 주말 교회학교를 “Christian School”의 개념으로 체계 있게 잘 묶어보는 일을 해 보자고 자녀교육부 스태프들에게 부탁했습니다. 그렇게 하기 위해서는 부모들의 적극적인 참여가 필요합니다. 우선 가정이 크리스천 라이프의 모델링이 이루어지는 장이 되어야 하고, 부모들의 신앙적 우선순위가 잘 정해져서 자녀들이 지속적으로 기독교 교육 환경에 노출되도록 해야 합니다. 이것에 대해서는 시간에 대한 헌신과 물질에 대한 헌신이 요구됩니다. 아울러 잘 준비된 커리큘럼의 체계적인 사용, 그리고 자녀들을 믿음과 사랑으로 잘 양육해 줄 교사들의 헌신과 연장교육이 필요합니다. 기도와 헌신으로 자녀교육부가 업그레이드되는 한 해가 되기를 기원합니다. 뿐만 아니라 연장교육의 개념으로 장년들의 신앙 훈련이 잘 되었으면 합니다. 기초반, 성경반, 양육반, 사역반으로 구성된 제자원이 알찬 훈련의 장이 되도록 정비되고, 사랑방을 통한 은혜 나눔과 말씀의 생활화가 더욱 효과적으로 이루어지기를 기대합니다. 지난 2년간의 임상을 통하여 좀 더 보강된 모습으로 새출발한 사랑방이 리더와 멤버들의 적극적인 참여와 노력으로 알찬 소그룹 공동체로 성숙되어 나가기를 바랍니다.
세계 속으로 하나님의 나라가 확장된다는 것은 “선교”에 대한 관심입니다. 올해는 해외선교와 국내선교가 명목상이 아닌 참여적 선교로 변화되기를 바랍니다. 우선 적극적인 정보 나눔이 이루어지는 위원회와 각 선교회 간의 소통이 확산되기를 바라며, 영적 전투에 있어 전방에서 기도로 싸우는 것을 함께 배워나가는 선교기도, 각자가 의지적으로 직접 참여해 보는 선교후원, 그리고 짧은 시간이라도 직접 지역사회의 그늘진 곳을 밝히는 일에 동참하는 것, 그리고 국외 선교지를 방문하고 작은 사역이라도 직접 참여해 보고, 우리를 대신하여 선교 현장에서 수고하는 선교사들을 개인적으로 알아가고 의도적으로 협력하는 모습이 우리 가운데 확산되기를 바라는 것입니다. 특히 각 선교회가 선교지향적 소그룹으로서의 가치답게 영적으로 다이내믹한 모습으로 변화의 발걸음을 내미는 그런 한 해가 되기를 기도합니다.
이제 온 교우들이 함께 손과 마음을 모아 주님께 헌신하는 한 해가 되기를 기도합니다.

Mission-Vision-Commitment-Action
In his book on leadership, Eddie Gibbs identified that a mission is “that which identifies an organization’s central, abiding and nonnegotiable task.” What is the nonnegotiable task (or tasks) of Jubilee Presbyterian Church as a localized community of Christ-followers? The mission must be identified in the biblical mandates for Christ’s church. It is always helpful to reclaim the basics in order for us to assure our existence as an authentic church. First of all, a church is a community that continues to set itself apart from the world in terms of what it values. It is a community of people who are “called out of darkness into his marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9). Secondly, as the Kingdom subjects, a church is a community of worship in both public and private domains. Thirdly, as Christ’s followers, we grow in love and care for one another as organic members of the Body of Christ. Finally, we are called to be the ambassadors of Christ for the world. We are called to proclaim the Kingdom-invitation issued by our King, and to practice mercy and promote justice in order to reflect more fully the loving and righteous character of our King.
From the mission comes our vision, the actualizing of the mission in our context: worship, small groups, discipleship groups and the cultivation of missional life. Something as practical as being more timely to the Lord’s Day worship and becoming active worshipers by intentionally engaging our heart & mind in worship, as the process of acknowledging God as our real Master/King over the kings of the world, must be given attention to. Also, our new Lord’s Day schedule from November will feature a regular exposure to the sharing of God’s blessing in the context of small groups. Anything new will take time to settle, but, more than passively waiting, each must be willing participants. Shedding a superficial community acting more like a mere crowd, through intentional and prayerful involvement in one-anothering, we must grow our belongingness to the Body of Christ as its members. Also, we must consistently weave together various learning communities, such as Homebuilders’, YAS, and College groups, and men and women’s fellowships. Leadership training will continue to be an important time of openly engaging in communal thinking towards strengthening ourselves to more faithfully live out the biblical mandates for the church. Moreover, we must together cultivate missional life as a community and as families and individuals. It means that our life-style will reflect a greater freedom from the cares of this world: What to eat, what to wear and how best not to be left out in the race to be great in the eyes of the world. We must take even a small step towards giving up some things we take for granted, in order to invest more time, finance, talents, and energy for expanding the Kingdom of God in all areas of life. Parents must think hard how to raise our children in the missional way of life: They will most certainly learn by observing specific ways the parents are making decisions about the use of these resources and, of course, by explaining to them the way of the Lord as it is reflected in these decisions.
These visions are meaningless unless they are followed by commitment and action. The Lord is calling us to an authentic Christian life even though we are living in a fallen, and therefore a spiritually challenging, world. Unless we regularly and consciously give ourselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit and be filled with him, we will end up living for the world and satisfying our sinful cravings. As we know by our own experiences, it is so easy to fall into this. A pursuit of holiness may seem like a foreign concept to many contemporary Christians, but we should never forget that the goal of our salvation is not, first of all, our happiness but our holiness. Ironically, the enjoyment of the world will bring us to a dead end called disillusionment; but the enjoyment of God and a faithful pursuit of Christ-likeness will bring us to an abundant life with a real satisfaction of the heart.
Let us pray for one another to be faithful partners in this journey. Please pray for your pastors to be competent and godly leaders who will do the ministry of the Word, prayer, leadership, and mentoring with joy. Please pray for our diaconate leaders and many volunteers who serve so faithfully, that they will never run out of the servant-heart towards the Lord. Let’s pray that all members of our church will grow in the knowledge of God and the fellowship with Him.
